Lucinda Barry was a Junior Detective for the SBPD before she was transferred for being in a relationship with Head Detective Carlton Lassiter. She only appears in the pilot and is replaced by Juliet O'Hara in the second episode, "Spellingg Bee". She apparently died at some point in the series, as in "Santabarbaratown 2" Shawn and Gus head to a firing range and notice an award for the Lucinda Barry Memorial Tournament (won by Lassiter).

Pilot[]

At the start of the pilot, Shawn is watching the news and deduces that the manager of the electronics store that was recently robbed was responsible for the crime and calls the tip into the police. We first meet Lucinda when she and Lassiter call Shawn into the police station because they don't believe he managed to solve multiple crimes just by watching the local news and instead think that he was involved in the crimes himself. Lassiter threatens to arrest Shawn but Lucinda is more forgiving and just asks him to explain himself. This is when Shawn gets the idea to pretend to be a psychic and uses things he's deduced about the cops and criminals to prove it.

Shawn is able to deduce that Junior Detective Barry and Head Detective Lassiter are having an affair, from the way he touches her hair. Lucinda is more lenient with Shawn than Lassiter, taking him to the department shooting range, where he shows her that he is a crack shot. At the end of the episode, she is transferred due to the fact that there would be a common perception she was climbing the ranks not because of hard work, but because Lassiter was romantically involved with her. Although this was, in reality, probably a simple matter of when particular scripts were written, within the timeline of the series it seems Lassiter lied to her about how long he and his wife had been apart. In "From the Earth to the Starbucks" Lassiter sets the record straight with Shawn, that it's been fifteen months longer than anyone else knows, whereas in the pilot she points out that he's barely separated, to which Lassiter replies, "It's been five months."

In the international pilot, she has much more screen time, sharing a couple of scenes with Shawn, in which she appears very capable, and not dependent on 'sleeping her way to the top'.
